Katie Young joined the Lanzarote Training Camp in 2023 after signing up for Marathon des Sables.
“As a complete novice to multistage races and indeed ultra marathons, after signing up for MDS with only 9 months to go, I thought it best to have some race specific training. Through the fortune of a good Google search I stumbled across Ian Corless’ Lanzarote training camp, perfectly placed 4 months before the MDS, it was a no brainer.“
Katie joined the camp and it soon became apparent that Katie had a natural ability, not only for running, but for running day-after-day.
“All the prior nerves that I wasn’t a good enough runner, and that I was going alone were very quickly calmed by the welcoming, friendly and fun group of camp participants and guides. Runners of all abilities from all over the world with a shared passion. And so the week of great trails and a lot of laughs began.“

“Lanzarote is a fantastic location, stunning volcanoes with views for miles and some great costal paths. It is the perfect training ground for Marathon des Sables, sand dunes, jebel like assents and breathtaking views. Club La Santa with its high grade sports facilities was a great base for us all. I hasten to add that the knowledge I gained from the guides, nutritionist, physio and the other camp attendees, has transformed my running. Not just technique, tips and tricks for specific terrains, but for recovery, nutrition, kit, and how to physically and mentally prepare and importantly enable you to enjoy and do your best at a multistage race. My MDS experience was really made by this camp.”
Katie arrived at the 2023 Marathon des Sables a complete unknown, however, after watching Katie on the training camp, I was sure there was a surprise awaiting for the women’s field at MDS.
Katie placed 1st British female and finished 6th in the feamle category.

“I enjoyed the training camp so much I couldn’t help myself but go back the following year. Such a perfect high volume training block before heading off to Costa Rica for The Coastal Challenge, another 6 day multistage adventure. Having the opportunity of the camp to run with such experienced runners collectively with tens of thousands of kilometers under their belts, there is always something to learn.“
Katie won the 2024 The Coastal Challenge.

Needless to say, Katie has been a real success and a great ambassador for what we do at the Lanazrote Training Camp. Of course, I had to ask, “Will you join us again in Lanzarote?”
“Great people, great location, great trails! Will I go back? Try and stop me!”
