“I first stumbled upon the Lanzarote Training Camp as I had signed up with Ian as a coaching client for HMDS in September 2019 and MDS 2020. I’d done a lot of research about coaches for the event and Ian’s approach and unique experience of MDS meant he was the right man for the job! HMDS went well , great learning experience, and as I was continuing with Ian’s coaching I signed up for the 2020 camp. My husband accompanied me as a non running partner that year and even though he didn’t get involved with the ‘camp’, a week at club la Santa with all the activities and facilities on the whole kept him out of mischief!”
Sara (Chilli) and Nigel have been ever-presents on the Lanzarote Training Camp for many years. As Sara says, they joined us in 2020 and have followed up with participation in 2022, 2023 and 2024. They are part of the Lanza furniture along with Ian and Cat Savage, Sarah Wixey and Terry Paul.
“For someone planning on doing MDS (or any other running event) the week at Lanza is in my opinion invaluable. To get access to such an experienced and knowledgeable group of coaches, participants, and guest speakers is a game changer, particularly as they are so keen to share their insights, knowledge and advice.”
Sara’s words ring true so much that Nigel and Terry, who originally joined the camps for a holiday and are now, in Sara’s words, “…crossed to the dark side!” The camp can have that impact on people and the development and growth we have seen with Nigel and Terry is really amazing. Dare I say, there may even be two future Marathon des Sables entries?

“MDS 2020 didn’t happen as we know but the coaching continued and I eventually got to the start line in September 2021. It was way too hot for me that year , along with many others , and I decided to call it a day on day 2 of the event. I have never regarded the ‘DNF’ as a negative, quite the opposite, it was a learning curve and I’m glad I dared to get on the start line.”

As Nigel will tell you, the ‘holiday’ at the Berbere Palace in Ouarzazate after pulling out from MDS made the entry fee for the race a bargain! It’s that level of support and commitment from Nigel that encourages Sara to try again.

“I returned to Lanza 2022 as I had signed up for a return visit to MDS, another great training week but in particular having met Inge, I decided to work with her on my weight and nutrition leading up to MDS with great success, both in weight loss and race nutrition. I had a fantastic experience at MDS 2022, in particular being able to cope and move through the sandstorms on day 2 that saw a significant amount of people time out, purely because in Lanza that year we were hit by sandstorms and Inge demonstrated how to combat them.”

“Being able to celebrate the medal with friends from Lanza who were also there was great and an unforgettable experience.”
We love success stories at our Lanzarote Training Camp. There is nothing more satisfying than helping individuals achieve their goals. We have literally helped hundreds of people on their journeys.
“I have now been to the Lanzarote Camp four times with my husband, we find the camp in January is a perfect time to reset and refocus on our goals and the warm weather and cold beer is an added attraction, regardless of wether you’re training for a specific event or not. My husband has now crossed to the dark side thanks to the Lanza camps and will be joining me at ‘Race to the Wreck’ in November. To be continued….!!”
